Una lectura relajada, Miss Marple está más viejita
It’s a good story, a bit predictable in parts but not her best work at all. Still a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.
Long work commutes just mean more audiobooks. And that sits well with me.
Who doesn't like a story about a crazed fan meeting their hero(ine), and then one of them suffering a horrible death?
Just me?
I think the main difference between the Marple novels and the Poirot novels is that Marple seems very much a background character and Poirot seems, well, Poirot. The man must not be ignored.
Unlike her male counterpart, Marple solves her mysteries with a patient hand and a listening ear. In that way, while Poirot can be immensely enjoyable to read, Marple may be more empathetic to the reader because of their lack of agency in the story, an obvious downside to the passive act of reading.
I did get bored a couple times reading this one, but the reveal of the motive at the end was particularly heartbreaking. Give me a good sympathetic motive and I'll be content with a mediocre beginning.
I'm really growing to like Marple, despite my disinterest with her at first.

Miss Marple shows her skills at reading people while mostly sidelined at home thanks to her needing to recover from bronchitis and being oppressed by her live-in nurse. I remember seeing a dramatization of this story many years ago, so I knew who had done what, but I found that as so often happens, I enjoyed this version so much more than the one I saw. For one thing, we got a chance to spend time watching Miss Marple outwit her nurse and go walking. Her assessments of people continue to be spot on.
