"Murder develops. Yes, like a photograph, isn't it?"

We're onto the final bend for the Agatha Christie reading challenge, and boy, do we have some exceptional stories to finish up the year with. For October, I decided to go with the 1962 Miss Marple masterpiece, The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side.

We join Miss Marple in the post-war period as she attempts to adjust to the rapidly changing world around her. The peaceful village of St Mary's Mead is racing ahead with the times as it undergoes development, businesses being sold, and old residents moving on. The "big house", namely Gossington Hall, has been sold on to the Hollywood starlet Marina Gregg, causing much excitment amongst St Mary's Mead.

When Miss Marple encounters an old friend, Heather Badcock, during one of her daily walks, she is glad to be reminded of old times. However, when Heather attends a party at Gossington Hall hosted by Marina Gregg, only to end up murdered by the end of the night, Miss Marple leaps at the chance to assist the police when it appears Heather was not the intended victim. Can Miss Marple solve the case before the killer reaches their target?

A mystery novel of the highest standard, Christie presents a cast of hugely entertaining characters with depth and complexity, adding to a multi-layered plot impossible - for me anyway! - to deconstruct.

While this is a riveting crime fiction and demonstrates Christie while she wrote at her best, I was intrigued by the underlying themes she worked into this novel. The reader explores the feeling of uneasiness and ageism that Miss Marple experiences entering her advancing years. Along with this, there is a distinct sense of loss and nostalgia as the world changes with modernity following the war. St Mary's Mead, once a quaint, quiet village, is now similar to a bustling town as developments overwhelm, though those who remember the past still cling to it.

The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side is a feat of crime fiction, and definitely should not be missed by any Christie fan.
