This is.....The Sound Of Music--no, The King and I + Idk...Daddy Daycare? (Never seen it) x Downton Abbey, maybe..?
The plot is pretty thin. You'd think the children and animals would've made things more lively, but these two characters aren't super interesting people. Just two dudes being almost unendurably Victorian.
Philip is one of those annoying tsunderes. And I usually like tsunderes. For example, Hartley is a super delightful a-hole. And Why isn't there a book about Alice?!?!? Whyyyyyy. I had originally thought that Alice was going to be the one in a little light mischief. But it was a totally different Alice?!?!?! whyyyy
It really didn't help that they didn't really try to hold themselves back (from doing the deed) for long. It's not very thrilling. I mean, sex scenes in general aren't very thrilling, but that's just me, and it's not this book's fault that I'm not its target audience.
This author hates landlords. And chronic illness is a recurring theme. I love it, actually, which is surprising considering that that topic is usually pretty triggering for me. The way she writes is very kind. I like her characters' improbable old timey sjw energy. I would prefer to think of a more woke alternate history when I'm reading regency romance because it's is an escape and I know it's not real.

KJ Charles, I fear you have a worthy rival in the historic romance fiction arena
3.5 stars
This is the *fourth* Cat Sebastian book I've read in the span of a month, if that tells you anything about how much I love her writing! This one had lower stakes and less overall tension than her previous series, but I did enjoy the idyllic setting with wonderful cast of characters

and from their lips they drew the "yoooooooooooo, nice"
I know the world is a cruel and unjust place because ACOTAR has well over a 4 star rating this one sits at 3.8.
Cruel cruel world.
The love is tender and romantic. Even the sex conveys the tender purity and excitement these two characters feel for one another. It was like I was falling in love with them and when those scenes came up I was just as excited to be experiencing it along side them.
Ugh! Lovely.
Only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because it's not perfect.
Then again, in its own way it is. I mean, it's not a meandering epic full of drama and angst and miscommunications and presumed unrequited longing, ignoring bounderies and threatening to kill each other. There's no wold being explored beyong the bubble of love.
But that's what falling in love feels like! You're not taking stock of your surroundings, calculating next moves. You're exploring this beautiful being that seems to unlock a source of divine that makes you reevaluate the world and your place in it. That makes you new, but also older at the same time. Gods I hope everyone gets to feel that at least once.
Fuck it. I'm changing my rating to 5 stars.
I feel all warm, fuzzy and starry eyed. Nostalgic for loves come and gone. Fourth wing could fuckin never.
In a way it reminded me of Silver in the Wood. If you liked this I would highly reccomend that one for more of a fairytale vibe.

This book is so good.
The characters are wonderful and so lovingly well-written. I absolutely adore them. The amount of conflict was perfectly balanced, in my opinion. The initial hesitancy was resolved in a timely manner and what followed was such a satisfying and refreshing dynamic of honesty and openness that I could have wept. Their commitment to communication is a marvel and I'm so happy for this little family.
Most of the issues came from outside sources, and it was all handled so well. Not ignoring it, but also not letting it win.
Everything was wrapped up nicely, but not annoyingly so; rather in a realistic and satisfying way.
A lovely romance novel centering a queer couple and I'm just so here for it. Highly recommended.
