I adore mythological retellings and this was no exception. Most tend to be Greek retellings but this story is based on North mythology.
We get to experience the Norse sagas through the lense of minor character, a woman sidelined, Angroboda.
Angroboda was killed and burned three times by Odin who was trying to use her powers of foresight for his own needs. Loki finds her heart that was cut from her and returns it to her whilst she heals in exile. They form a friendship which turns to love as she is the only one who accepts him for what he is.
Bearing him three unusual children their fates inescapable, their relationship eventually is poisoned by betrayal.
I liked the characterisations of everyone, they were all mostly given depth, except maybe Thor. Angroboda is a interesting narrator, witnessing the events of the Gods from the outskirts but being integral to their story through her children.
Atmospheric, fairytale like and surprisingly emotional I loved that it had a hopeful though bittersweet ending which suited the tone of the story.

 - I fully expected to have to slog through THE WITCH'S HEART, as I have little interest in Norse mythology. However, I read the entire thing in one day and one sitting, completely drawn in to Angrboda's story.
- The writing reads like oral tradition, flowing on and on.
- While many of the plot developments were telegraphed in advance, taking Angrboda longer to catch on that it probably should have, I still found myself quite immersed in the story.

I love mythology retellings, and this one definitely stands on its own among them. My first brush with Norse Mythology rather than Greek, and I’m really pleased with how it went because it came from such a unique perspective. Angrboda was easy to love, and such a fierce and protective mother. Loki was easy to hate, but he somehow manages to escape slightly likeable. I was constantly surprised at how the book progressed, and the ending broke my heart. If you loved Circe (like I did) then you’d love this one just as much.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a good, adult retelling of Norse Mythology. The Witch's Heart really made me rethink the story of Angrboda, who is always just so briefly mentioned in connection to Loki.
