Space thrift shopping. Cozy, but with a lot of accounting.

Listened to the podcast version of the audio book on Spotify.  Very good reading by the author.  I was looking for a Sci-Fi with entrepreneurial themes, and was pleased to also satisfy my love for sailing.  Triple whammy! Easy listen/ read, no a hard-core Sci-Fi, no weird names or crazy tech.  Nothing spectacular, but I very very much enjoyed this book.

I enjoyed reading this, although not much ultimately happened! It's a well realised world as we follow Ishmael selling into life in a starship and forming a friendship with Pip. Both characters, and all the minor characters, were likeable. There were a few moments where people said, "this is so obvious, I can't believe no one ever thought of it before" where I thought- "yes it's rather convenient that the main character has found an incredibly obvious solution to a problem that leads everyone to be impressed with him" but I can't be mad about it. I'm not going to rush out and read the next one right now, but I'd be happy to read it sometime if I wanted something similarly gentle and readable

Bullet Review:

  • A bit miffed the last hour is just an excerpt from the sequel.
  • It took me a long time to finish, but that’s not the fault of the book.
  • The friend who recommended this to me said this was more of the “boring day-to-day space life” - which is accurate and fun to NOT be a huge massive plot.
  • I wish she were here so I could talk to her about it.
