The man who wasn’t there is the third installment in the Sebastian Bergman series written by Hjorth and Rosenfeldt who are really quite masterful in weaving together a very credible, sequential and thoroughly enjoyable series. This is the first book in this series that I have given 5 stars to as it was a really great read - just the right level of complexity, parallel stories and characters that all come together in logical ways. The story is somewhat tragic in many ways and has some deeply sad undertones as it makes comment around immigration, terrorism and crimes in the name of national security. These are clearly topics that Scandinavian countries grapple with due to the frequency that they turn up as topics in books.
In terms of the characters in this series, I still don’t like the protagonist Sebastian Bergman and to be honest I don’t really go for any of the characters. Billy might be an exception. It’s unusual for me to like a series so much with out a character that I can connect with.
Looking forward as usual to the next one in this series.

The thrillers in this series are all of an very good level, something between 3 and 4 stars. While I didn’t like the MC at all at the start of the series, I start to appreciate him more over time (though he is sometimes a real jerk)
I have to say though that the books start to give more and more attention to the characters of the investigators, less to the crime. I do hope they don’t end up (like some other series) as not really being any genre of book at all.

The third Sebastian Bergman novel is once again quite interesting. It certainly helps that the characters are already familiar. The plot is pretty good as well - the case seems quite mysterious at first, but then begins to unravel in an interesting way. The ending is particularly fiendish, and makes you wait for the fourth book.

Tämä sarjan kolmas osa oli aihepiiriltään itseäni vähiten kiinnostava, mutta taitavasti rakennettu juoni tässäkin oli. Jossain kohdissa lukeminen kyllä vähän puuduttikin ja olisin toivonut pienempää sivumäärää. Jollain perverssillä tavalla tuo rikospsykologi Sebastian Bergman on kyllä kiinnostava! Outo yhdistelmä täysin patologista valehtelijaa ja hujaria ja toisaalta hyvinkin inhimillinen tyyppi - sarjan edetessä yhä inhimillisempi? Loppu jäi ärsyttävästi semmoiseen kohtaan, että melkein pakkohan tässä on siirtyä pian siihen seuraavaan osaan.

¿Puede que haya sido un error empezar a leer la saga a partir del libro 3? Sí y no. Sí, porque seguramente me haya hecho spoilers de las tramas de los otros libros, o porque ya me he introducido en un mundo con unos personajes ya desarrollados. Vamos, que no me puedo quitar el pensamiento de encima de que me he perdido algunas cosas (aunque pequeñas) sobre la trama y sobre la relación entre los personajes. Aun así, se puede leer como un libro autoconclusivo sin problema.
Respecto a la trama como tal, me ha gustado mucho que la historia se cuente desde múltiples perspectivas, que no se centre solo en el caso, sino también en la vida de las personas implicadas. Y bueno, aunque en cierto modo te revele el asesino un poco al principio, la trama tan compleja que hay alrededor y la forma en que las diferentes subtramas se unen es maravillosa. Sin embargo, para que llegue a ese punto, se toma su tiempo, y puede que muchas veces peque de irse un poco por las ramas y de centrarse en otros personajes que, a primera vista, no tienen mucha relación con el caso principal. Pero vamos, bajo mi punto de vista, estaba tan interesada por todos y cada uno de los personajes, que tampoco me importó mucho que no se avanzara mucho con la trama principal. ¡Incluso me preocupé (en cierto modo) por Sebastian! Real que leí en uno de las reseñas aquí en Goodreads que, a pesar de ser un completo idiota y un ser humano despreciable, los autores tienen la capacidad de engancharte y hacer que quieras seguir leyendo. Repito, puede que eso se deba a que no se centra solo en este personaje, sino en el gran elenco que le rodea.
Dicho esto, es una novela bastante emocionante, que, a pesar de su desarrollo algo lento, te mantiene enganchado página tras páginas. Y bueno, termina con un cliffhanger inmenso, y, aunque tampoco me ha suscitado tan curiosidad como para seguir leyendo la saga, lo más probable es que lo termine haciendo
