Jarod K Anderson is one of my favorite poets. I took months to read this short volume because I wanted to savor it, because I didn't want it to end.

He makes me feel more human, and also less tied up in my own human trials and tribulations. He gives me perspective. He makes me want to write my heart out.

It's hard to review poetry. Here are a few of my shorter favorites:

--

Risk and Reward

Feeling deeply is dangerous.

Doing anything else is tragic.

--

Make things.

Make things that might embarrass you.

Make things that leave you feeling exposed,

like you've left a vital part of yourself out on the line to dry.

Make things that pester you with growing pains as you lie down to sleep.

Make things with the kind of love you can't ever take back.

--

Just Because

Write poetry because you need to.

Because it's hard.

Because language is broken, but if you brave the sharp edges,

you might make something worth having.
