Sort of a coming-of-age story set in a Welsh mining town. Very sad and violent but the author's writing is like poetry.

This is my favorite book. It's a story well-told and beautifully written. How Green Was My Valley chronicles the boyhood of the Welsh Huw Morgan and his family's stuggles as a mining family in Wales. I first read this book as a high school senior; I have read it three times since. This is a story that never grows old.

A beautifully written coming of age book about a Welsh boy and his family. It is quite a long book, but worth the time. It is set in a small coal mining community in the years of queen Victoria and Churchill. There was a little bit of language and some sexuality (more hinted at, nothing graphic).

Absolutely beautiful. Lyrical prose, humorous and heartbreaking. Everything I’d hoped it would be. Definitely a story to be savored, I reread so many passages directly after reading a page, lovely. A new addition to my all time favorites shelf. 5/5 stars.

This had come up on a few must-read-classics lists, so I gave it a shot and was largely pleasantly surprised. A coming-of-age story of a young Welsh man, the book explores labor unions, loss, love, etc. I liked Llewellyn's exploration of gender roles and some of his insights on how frustrating being young can be. Overall would recommend, with the caution that it might lag a bit if you're used to fast-paced narratives.
