Wow, now this book is truly phenomenal, read during my COVID imprisonment. It deserves every smidgen of praise given to it because I don't think I've ever read a book about the first world war that evoked such a constant wave of feelings. The protagonist talks endlessly about his indifference to life as a result of the war yet the entire book is practically a monologue of those suppressed emotions and thoughts, it's brilliant. It's incredibly sad, and at times funny too.
I highly recommend everyone read this. I always appreciate books that recognise that the first world war was not about heroes, there was very very little "good vs evil" compared to the obvious "good guys vs fascists" seen in the second world war. In this book, the heroes are the people who make living through this whole ordeal bearable.
