I finally understand how great these books are for explaining prejudice and intolerance. Now that I've read this, I think it'll be easy to use this book as a reference when talking about prejudice in our real world.
The tale itself -- of three animals trying to save the world and wrap up a trilogy where book 2 ended with a cliffhanger ending -- isn't terribly original, but I do like the fact that the adventurers (and, in fact, many of the characters along the way) are animals. Gilbert adds a lot of humor and I'd read the book just to see what he is going to say next. I'd say that the puddle viewing forecasts of the future add a lot of suspense, too. Prophesies and seeing the future is handled very well in this book: things that seem very understandable keep turning out differently than the reader expects.

I am really enjoying this series! I love how all the different magical animal species have unique talents, and how they live in areas specifically suited for them. This installment had a number of twists and unexpected revelations, making it an even more compelling read than the previous two books.
I think I would have given this book 5 stars if not for the explicitly gruesome descriptions of zombie animals! The target audience is grades 3-7, so I guess the content is mostly appropriate for that age range... My third grade daughter seemed less bothered by the Dead Army than I was, so maybe it's my own prudish sensibilities that make me a little wary of the violence and gore in this book. Also, I didn't understand the point of the short-lived re-introduction of Grimslade.

Still an enjoyable series to read. I wish they'd focus a bit less on Aldwyn and a bit more on the other Familiars and the Loyals.
