DID NOT FINISH

I would say that I did not like this book, I did not finish. The main character was insufferable and frankly unlikeable. So when her mother is kidnapped, I did not care. I did not get very far. I understand that the main character is a teenager but holy crap I could not deal with her. So I closed the book on her. I may return but it is likely not anytime soon.

this book is like colin meloy’s wildwood if it were a lot fucking angrier i said what i said and i will stand by it. die on its hill even. i found this book series bc one of my friends had read the novella and she has a pretty strong stomach for horror. and when SHE said she was scared i thought i should maybe read this series.

this was such a fun read. alice was such an interesting character and i love the relationship with her mom.

This book caught me pretty much from the first page. I don't usually like first-person stories but this one hooked me and the premise was interesting. Alice struck me as relatable, like ...harsh at times, and she says things she doesn't mean and is self-aware about her anger problems. I'm trying to be vague to avoid spoilers so bear with me. Finch is kinda problematic at times, but give me a black nerd character any day, Finch was a decent swing that seems to have missed for a lot of reviewers and this book would have gotten 5 stars if he'd been done better by, but I'm not rage-filled about what's here, just kind of concerned. The fantasy elements trickle in before the wave in a way that I enjoyed and which made sense to me, the writing itself is really good, and the fairy tales are dark and horrifying but wonderfully rendered. The conclusion was satisfying for the most part (
Spoiler omg Finch going missing the same day as her and not being missed by his father OR ANY FRIENDS OR EXTENDED FAMILY AT ALL EVER ... it's handwaved when i maybe wanted a line about a friend doing blog posts or just...something, because he is the only black character we spend time with and having him disappear with only Alice being shown to care and the possibility of his father hiring a PI is just one of the vague missteps with him that make him a decent attempt and not brilliant representation
). I would generally recommend this book if you feel up to some darkness in your reading. Alice's agency and the underlying messages about stories are worth being a little brave if you feel up to that.

This book is very enjoyable and definitely took me by surprise.

I can see why so many people say that there seems to be two distinct parts to this book as the first half read like a creepy paranomal mystery while the second was very OUAT meets the Other Mother's world from Coraline.

I absolutely adored the relationship between Alice and her mum throughout the story and liked how the reveals seemed to bring them closer together while other author's may have used it as an excuse to estrange them. (Love reading about positive Mother/Daughter relationships!)

I'm really intrigued to see how the story is continued in 'The Night County' as this could be read as a satisfying standalone.
