Is Young Adult supposed to have all these f-words in it? Or am I just being a bit prudish? I might be prudish. I probably am.
This was a book that I enjoyed to a surprising degree. I picked it up, I admit this freely, because of the beautiful cover. I read it because the blurb on the back sounded vaguely interesting.
I read this book in about a week. That's fast for me. It usually takes a couple of weeks for me because I have limited time for reading. This one kept inviting me to do just a little bit more, and suddenly there I was, halfway through.
For the longest time I wondered why I liked the story so much, because I didn't actually like the protagonist much. I found her rude and standoffish, but the more I read the more I started to understand her a little bit. I could understand why she would seem to actively work against making friends or allowing people to even be interested in getting to know her, because it would just be painful to leave them behind when next she and Ella suddenly upped sticks. Even later on, when we learn more about her background, these traits come together even more and a lot of her character makes a lot more sense. This is done so smoothly that I can't actually pinpoint exactly when I found myself rooting for her.
This was a wonderful story, and I'm looking forward to the sequel.

I really did enjoy this dark take on fairy tales. It was such a unique idea that brought fairy tales to life in a way that was rich and enthralling. As someone who reads a lot of fairy tale retellings, this story really pulled me in and showed me a side to modern fairy tales that isn't so sweet.

Trippy and dark, this Story was lightly predictable in some small ways but still sunk its teeth in and pulled me along. Reading this felt like a dream, and I mean that in the most literal sense — constantly giving me vertigo, slipping from event to event in a way that makes you wonder how you got here, if there was a better choice to have been made, but that it still makes sense, that you were always going to end up here. It’s Alice in Wonderland but dark and botanical, and I mean that as a compliment. Some things could have been more fleshed out, but overall a very good read.
