I found this book disappointing compared to the previous book. It was thematically weaker than the previous book, with fewer fun action sequences, or even preparation for fun action sequences. The soul-bee contest, while not violent, fulfilled a similar high-stakes feel of an action sequence, but the mud-fight with Pinki's cousins wasn't so convincingly high-stakes. I don't mind characters talking a lot, but with the memorable plot-building moments all being negotiations, it feels dull, and a misuse of its action-adventure potential. I also don't feel Pinki's beliefs regarding the value of both ahimsa and violence against one's oppressors were fully addressed.

I'm listing "deportation" only because the society-wide banishment of elders into the wider galaxy through the intergalactic transit corridor is sort of similar to deportation. I figure that "banishment" is generally understood to refer to just one person who did bad things, or perhaps a small band of people.
