Although it's a classic Holmes mystery what I enjoyed was the touch of the supernatural in the story and the presence of fear of the curse that may happen. At times it felt like reading a horror story.

how come holmes always talks so lengthy and overcomplicated? he's just a bore, and a heighty one at that.
i actually thought i was gonna enjoy this more than some of the other sherlock holmes stories, what with the setting and the mystery, but then the ending was just somewhat underwhelming. the villain is found out a looong time before they are catched and then the actual mystery of it all is just too simple. there is no real red hering, no interesting characters apart from the villain and their surroundings. also, they're a domestic abuser, but of course that's no ones business, i mean who cares if someone beats and emotionally abuses their partner, seems like that's just sad for the victim but nothing more, what can one do except force them to stay in the marriage? and those dudes pride themselves in being such noble gentlemen, i really can't. field study in late victorian misogyny.
that said, as other reviewers have noted, the moor is a big part of this novel, almost like its own character, and the overall gothic setting is really spooky and interesting. also, we do get more of watson here, which i like, because i actually prefer him over holmes (except for his very victorian misogynist indifference and colonialist arrogance which sometimes shine through)

I read this for my august book club book and honestly it wasn't bad!!! I listened to it as an audio book which was different for me but i enjoyed it.

Very engaging! Doyle's imagination as a writer equals his other profession as a doctor.

Clearly written, using Victorian style descriptions but not too long. The book and story is a page turner, full of suspense and a couple of red herrings to tease our guesses.
