Okay yeah this one slaps. Slow start, incredible finish. It makes me hate The Angel of the Crows all the more.

Classic Detective Granddaddy Sherlock Holmes of excellent breeding romps across the moors of Devon in search for a spectral hound or a human agency at the leash. A reread from some time ago, and I was surprised to find the class subtext which I hadn't noticed/cared about as a young reader. Conan Doyle really rubs in the 'natural' distinction of the classes, and the story reads like an affirmation of caste. That is, until we come to our whodunnit to find, horror! that a member of the same class is our murderer. Still, the outcome does little to shake the class dye from the pages. Truth and justice prevails and the lord and master and saviour of the surrounding peasantry lives to continue his rightful inheritance. Probably an accepted truth in 1902, but stinks a bit today.

Perhaps this one being so burned into public consciousness does a disservice to the original text. Lots of clever and exciting moments, but not my favourite Holmes story!
A great book. Even if Sherlock is not in it for a long portion of it.
After reading the adventures followed by the Memoirs, it is nice to see the character returned to the long-form story. This was a particularly good one and is understandably one of the most recognizable stories of Sherlock Holmes.
