One of the best books I’ve ever read, if not THE best.
Thrilling, anxiety-inducing, emotional and yet hilarious at the same time.

Can’t wait to suggest this read to others, I loaned it from the library but will definitely be purchasing my own copy. This is something that deserves to be remembered and celebrated for years to come.

Insanely slow until about 3/4 of the way through, at which point it goes insanely fast. Pacing is way off with romance that just draws from the plot. Good racial commentary at times, fell flat others.

I found When No One is Watching to be a very interesting read but not for many good reasons. It took half the book to gain relevant action. I wasn’t much of a fan of the main characters and topics of race and gentrification felt like they were being told to me rather than shown in the book. I wasn’t that much of a fan but when things started to pick up around the 2nd half I found myself glued to the pages. The ending felt extremely rushed, and I wasn’t a fan of it. All and all, I’d say there were enough aspects of the book that made me interested and kept me going but I still felt it was a bit lack luster and infuriating at points. I will say there were a few twists I definitely didn’t see coming but the main twist was pretty obvious to me from the start.

Wow. Every good thing I’ve heard about this proves true. The amount of twists and turns that all added up so perfectly -while still remaining believable (scarily believable) - just shows how well Cole adapted to the thriller genre. The amount of power and truth behind Cole’s fictional story is both amazing and a little horrifying (mostly due to the truth part). If I can say one thing about this, it’s read it. Just read it. Don’t ask too many questions. I will eagerly pick up more thrillers from Cole should she write more in the future.

Okay, so this book had me in all sorts of ways while I was reading it. A pretty slow (but very necessarily slow) burn until the big action starts... really great character development. What took me some time to realize - Alyssa Cole crafts this story and pulls you in, and drops hints, and feeds you bits in a way you didn't even know was happening until you're like, "WAIT A MINUTE HERE..." And then you see all the clues, all the bits, have been setting up for a crescendo of sorts. But it's not a mystery novel. I wish I had ways to describe it better... it IS thrilling. But it takes a while to get there. Not at all boring during the slow trod of the first half, just maybe not what you'd expect til the bottom starts to drop out in the second half. And then you realize the train you're on has become a roller coaster and wow, just wow. THRILLER. And then, you finish, and you realize just how true to life some of this really is.

So basically, EXCELLENT.
