It was a bit confusing at first as it's German and I'm not 100% sure of German terminology. I kept thinking "Herr" and "Frau" were names and thought the characters were different people, but after I found out they were german terms of respect (my best example would be Mr. and Mrs.) it made a lot more sense. The story is really captivating and has a lot of twists, the characters are incredibly complex and the way trauma was portrayed especially in Jasmine was extremely accurate. It's a very creatively written dark, twisted tale that I've already recommended to a couple friends and family members. I do feel like the ending wasn't as satisfying as it could have possibly been, but it certainly wasn't bad. I saw a lot of reviews about translation issues, but personally I didn't have any. Even with translation issues I'd highly recommend this book, it's a really good read you won't regret.

⚠️ CW: kidnapping, rape, sexual assault, violence, murder, physical abuse, emotional abuse, child abuse, mental health, suicide and child death ⚠️ If you're looking for a fast paced thriller that will leave your mind reeling at the end because of all the twists and turns then this one is for you! A windowless shack in the woods. Lena's life and that of her two children follows the rules set by their captor, the father, meals, bathroom visits and study time are strictly scheduled and meticulously observed. He protects his family from the dangers lurking in the outside world and makes sure that his children will always have a mother to look after them. One day Lena manages to flee, but the nightmare continues. It seems as if her tormentor wants to get back what belongs to him. And then there is the question whether she really is the woman called 'Lena', who disappeared without a trace over thirteen years ago. The police and Lena's family are all desperately trying to piece together a puzzle that doesn't quite seem to fit. This book had me gripped from start to finish and I just could not put it down and even when I did, it was still living in my head rent free. The twists and turns were so incredible and the multiple pov's made it feel almost claustrophobic and so chilling. The only reason I dropped it down a star is because I kept losing track slightly due to some translation issues. Overall, I highly recommend this book but please read over the CW's beforehand because it is a hard hitting read.

I was really expecting something more thrilling and chilling, the first few chapters were and the last few chapters were but the middle of the book felt more like an example of three people dealing with their own emotional distress.

I think the book would have been more thrilling if we knew from the beginning the captor was still alive, up until the last 50 pages we thought he and the threat were dead.

A fantastic read. I loved the alternating character POVs in this book. It kept me engaged and made it hard to set this book down.

My only complaint is that the monologue of the bad character at the end is super long and a little corny. Just kinda plays into the “big bad villain gives a long speech” trope. So I found myself skimming a bit there.

That wasn’t too bad, though. Overall, I loved this book.
