So, I won this book a year and a half ago as a Goodreads giveaway... it finally made it to the top of a pile, so I'm reading it. Let's see how this one goes.

Well, now that I'm done, I can say that while the premise on the cover blurb had promise, the execution was lacking in every way possible.

The book was far too short for the scope that was presented to us. Too much happens in such a short amount of pages, to the point where everything was just glossed over because things were moving along light years a second. We needed to stop and smell the roses, so to speak.

Second, the characters... there were FAR too many for such a short book. And it read like the author had a encyclopedia of various mythos open beside him and randomly picked names from it. None of the characters had any staying power because we never got to know any of them. Not even the PoV character, which is a cardinal sin IMHO. We never find out why anyone is doing what they are doing, their motivations, what they are thinking... nothing. Everything is happening in a vacuum.

And then there is the year that this all takes place. The back cover blurb says 3594, but the second chapter says 5638... which is it?

All in all, it's almost as if someone tried to write a spacefaring D&D campaign into prose. it just didn't work for me at all.

Very enjoyable, fast-paced story. The idea of building up a Capek's mind to make them more human and easy to relate to was brilliant! My only complaint? Too short!

Cute! Short and cute! Nothing too challenging, but damn fine entertainment nonetheless and a nice twist on the stale robot-oriented sci-fi genre. I can't remember the last time I read an approx. 200 page book in only a few days when I didn't have much (any) time to read. I still can't figure out when I actually sat down and digested this thing. It went fast, that much I can say. And no, it's not printed with childrens' book size type either.

One thing I absolutely adore about this book: it's professionally edited. If you had told me I was about to read a crowdsourced first-book from an indie author that's typo-free and uses correct words ("their, they're, there," people) I would have spat out my Baileys and cried "DON'T TOY WITH ME!" But it's the truth. Dude can write, and dude had a great editing team. So, so refreshing.

A sequel is in the works. I'll be in line to get it when it's published, no doubt about it. Nice work.

I received this book as a Goodreads Giveaway in exchange for an honest review. I honestly loved all the space-bending that went on in this book. Very visual.
