This is the second book I have read from this team, and, while I didn’t like it quite as much as The Down River People, it is still an incredible debut. Smith and Fox create a similar, quiet and haunted vibe in both stories that is incredibly impressive. Smith has a great ear for naturalistic dialogue, and Fox imbues a lot of character into the silent moments.

I read this book in one sitting and parts of it echoed an emotional reaction I haven’t had since my first reading of, “Of Mice and Men”. It’s an interesting take on the use of narrative and mythology to treat mental illness.

I would read again, slowly in the winter for a different perspective than the way the art rolled off my body on this summer evening on my porch.

UM HELLO this graphic novel is gorgeous. Grief and the meaning of home and brotherhood all wrapped under the guise of southern tragedy. Mythology meets backwater towns. Valkyries are 11 and have big ole sticks. Dads make meth and brothers see things. A beautiful walk.

Interesting, but for a standalone it didn't really have a sense of completion.

A beautiful, melancholy book. I was impressed by how expressive the colors are with such a limited pallete. I could easily see this made into a Jeff Nichols movie, it definitely has a feel like Mud. It is easy to see why this book earned an Eisner nomination.

This graphic novel moved me to tears. It has been awhile since I have actually cried at something, but this was gut-wrenching in parts. Yes, there is a bit of a "what the heck is going on" feel to it, but overall I enjoyed it. It is very otherworldly in nature and makes one question their own life, if you get the overall message. It took me some time, so don't feel bad if it doesn't immediately hit you. The artwork also adds a richness to the narrative. I don't think this could have been anything but a masterful graphic novel. It would have failed as a regular novel. I wish I could do this particular graphic novel justice, but I know I cannot. I recommend reading it and forming your own bond with it. Find out if it is something you enjoy. If it is, I believe you will be changed for the better from the experience.

I enjoyed this a great deal. I'd heard about it through the Talking Comics podcast. Basically a slice of life comic with a slight magical twist, it did remind me of plenty of other things, but the content really won me over even if the actual device used to explore it is not exactly new. Which is really the important thing.
