I didn't finish this one. Not my cup of tea. I think it's over a year since I picked this up, but if I recall correctly the focus is on the non-technical aspects of software development.

I read this book about a decade ago, and at that time it was the outstanding book on how to create well-structured reliable code - clearly articulating concepts that a proficient developer might intuitively recognise as "good" or "bad" practise without necessarily knowing why.

The world has moved on a bit since then, and this book has been heavily revised, so I would recommend getting the newer version

A worthy tomb for anyone involved in software development. It will remain on my shelves due to the excellent bibliography included.

[I am only going to include 10 tech books, a represtative sample]

Fabulous book. If I was interested in cars, then this book would tell me how cars are and should be made. I can't believe that any programmer has not read this book. Start here.

This book was a pretty good read. Most of what is discussed is extremely valuable information. Although with only 5 years of experience I felt like many of the points that Steve brought up were fairly obvious once you've been working as a Software Developer. If you are new to programming, want to move to a more professional level of programming or just plain have plenty of time on your hands this is a great book. However, if you already have a fair amount of experience developing software professionally, I would suggest you look elsewhere for good reading.

A more modern and concise version of this book would be worth its weight in gold. Figure out ways to organize and bug proof your code and write up some best practice notes, or better yet steal them from other successful people!

This is the greatest book about software engineering. There are so many references for other researches and books.
I would really love to see new edition with modern examples and changes.
