It pains me a little rating this book fairly low, as I do think the writing was really quite good, however it was just overall lackluster for me.

First, I was expecting more fantasy. It’s really not. Historical fiction with some magical realism? Yes. It starts quite quickly and I found myself intrigued. The middle to end? It dragged. There was just nothing intense or intriguing about it.
Plus shocker, the big spoiler was already given to you in the synopsis. You know the big secret.

There were many parts that felt unnecessary, like listening to Laurie whine about everything. I did appreciate the LGBTQIA+ twist on this story. It just didn’t always make sense in the historical setting
Jane being ostracized? Yes. Everyone being like cool! Only the one old bat gives AF! Nooooot as likely.

I just didn’t love it 🤷🏼‍♀️

I really enjoyed Rose Sutherland’s storytelling and writing style. Although the timeline takes place in the 19th century, Sutherland still made the characters relatable and modern without seeming out of place for the time period. I also feel like this book is a perfect start for readers who wish to dip their toes into the genres of fantasy or magical realism, while also being a great read for historical fiction lovers.

Thank you Penguin Random House Canada and NetGalley for the copy to review.

A sweet tale with plenty of yearning, cozy fantasy adjacent. Had some slow bits in the middle but they were needed to balance out the more tense last third of the book.
