A fascinating look at music as a tool for healing, not just your heart and soul, but your relationship to other people and your surroundings, and a myriad of tangible physical illnesses to a significant degree. Everyone used to think I was nuts when I told them listening to my favourite singer would always help me get rid of a headache, but I now feel vindicated.

When I can’t stop talking about a book, that’s a five star book to me. This book was so interesting and touched on so many topics related to music and the brain. It definitely made me want to pick back up some musical instruments and maybe join a choir. I immediately wanted to share what I learned from this book about how music affects the brain, how it related to brain differences, how aging is impacted by music…plus there were all the cool stories about famous musicians and composers. There were some parts that were a bit dense for me, both parts about music theory and about brain anatomy and chemistry, but overall it was a really fun book and I highly recommend it.

There seems to be an expectation of understanding music theory but it's still enjoyable without extensive knowledge. Some basic understanding would help though.
The science of music and the best form of medicine. Highly researched, technical and over my head in areas but thoroughly interesting.
“The ability music has to engage us wholly and completely is one of the reasons it can be such a powerful therapeutic agent. For it is out of a loss of the sense of self that we can achieve true healing and reintegration”.
