i’m not sure why, but this book just didn’t hit for me the same way the others did in the series. i think it’s the way Felix’s character was presented. I LOVE HIM! he’s definitely the black cat to Avi’s golden retriever, but his constant self-sabotaging in the beginning really put me off from enjoying his story for a bit.

that’s not to say that i didn’t enjoy the story overall, though. it was just so hard for me to focus on liking the way the relationship was progressing when it kept stalling because of Felix’s insecurities. NOW, i don’t hate how vulnerable his character was. i actually loved that Avi’s character was crafted in a way to cater to Felix’s needs perfectly, BUT i didn’t like the feeling that Felix was always ready to run away. it never went away for me, even at the end.

NOW, despite all that, i liked the change of scenery compared to the other books. i think putting this chaotic whirlwind of a couple in the middle of nowhere for the majority of the story was beneficial to really seeing these characters develop individually and together. especially since back home they’re surrounded by people, so being in the middle of buttfuck nowhere really made me focus on how focused they were on each other. 💗

THAT’S ALL I’LL SAY ABOUT THAT 🙂‍↕️

I loved Avi and Felix! There were a few times I just wanted to wrap Felix up in a blanket and hug him. He was so much more fierce and bossy than I thought he’d be, but still very vulnerable at times. I really liked their chemistry and how Avi submitted to Felix - there are some seriously hot scenes and the knife play was just… wow. Loved every word. Also adored Avi’s nickname for Felix.

I appreciated the plot in this, it was a new twist and felt different from the other books. It was also a nice touch that the first part of the book happened parallel with “Headcase” and filled out that story a bit. Zane and Felix were so adorable once they met and I hope there are more of their friendship in coming books!

However, I was a little disappointed since there’s been quite a build up towards the twins’ books and I really wanted more about their bond and communication, and I just feel like that didn’t happen in either book. Avi is struggling with Asa gone but I just thought there would be more? Or at least more on their ability to communicate and sense each other.

I can’t wait for Archer’s book, I love this family of psychopaths, their partners and all their fuckery so much!

I know I’ve said it before, but I love this series so much! Each book keeps getting better and better. And adds more layers to the Mulvaney universe that I want to dive right into.

I loved Avi and Felix! They had such good banter and they would argue, tease, and snipe at each other at every given opportunity. I also loved the fact that everyone around them could see that they were into each other before they did. And I totally agree, Felix is a barbed wire wrapped marshmallow and Avi is a murderous golden retriever. They just fit together so well! Another thing I loved about this book was the little peek we got at Zane and Felix’s queerplatonic relationship. And I can’t leave Aiden out! It was so nice to have his presence more firmly rooted in this book. I can’t wait to see how things turn out for him and Thomas. Mad Man is getting five stars!

DNF @ 55% aka 4hrs 20mins out of 7hrs 53mins.

Yeah I just can't do Felix, and the audiobook is exacerbating the mild dislike I had towards him into something I don't really want to continue listening to. Avi I loved! I'm sorry but he is precious! They had great banter, when Felix could get over himself, and when I say get over himself I mean the whole projecting he was doing onto Avi and blaming him for whatever scenario he cooked in his head.

Plus the narrator is hardly voicing the MCs differently so it takes a moment to figure out who is talking when.

the author is a confirmed swiftie in my book (august? archer? all the “death by a thousand cuts”? “now go stand in the corner and think about what you did? yeah i see it). i love how each book explores different crimes, and how the characters feel connected to it. i really enjoy the dynamic that has developed throughout the series and im lowkey sad of getting to the end :(

felix and avi were great together. their relationship was well balanced in my opinion and i loved it even more once zane and asa got in the mix, i feel like zane is what felix needs to feel balanced (also im never opposed to why choose romances, so the fact that this dances a bit on that line is amazing).
