The characters were great and the action was cool. I thought it was going to be a cliche mob book, but it was way more than that. The story was very self-aware especially the ending. Will read moe Elmore Leonard novels.

Similar to others who rated this book poorly, the story started out great but then all of the dialogue got in the way. I read Elmore was unhappy with Dustin Hoffman and this book was his revenge.

I didn't like the movie either.

This won't dissuade me from continuing though all of his writing.

Leonard's novel about a loan shark/enforcer trying to break into Hollywood. The dialogue is good, but the writing and rewriting of the script, which is central to the book, made everything feel really indirect and low stakes. I guess it is also meant to be funny, but I didn't laugh at all. I have read and enjoyed at least one book by Leonard, but this one was not for me

A great book. Having been a fan of the film before coming to the book, I was surprised how closely it stuck to the book, with a lot of the same scenes and dialogue. Chili Palmer is a great character, and a joy to read. Read the Folio Society edition.
