I absolutely LOVED this book. I cried, I laughed, I highlighted A LOT. This book has inspired me to look for another therapist after my many failed therapy attempts. I did not expect this book to effect (idk which a/effect to use here I hope I did it right) me as much as it did. Will definitely be purchasing this book and telling everyone to read it.

What a great book! Lori Gottlieb talks about her life, how she became a therapist, and her struggles as well as the life challenges of her patients in such way that we feel like we're reading a novel. So many insights, the kind of book that naturally teaches you so much about psychology and gives you tools to cope with your own struggles without sounding like a "self-help" book. I loved it! ❤️

I really enjoyed this book, and of course, I’m obsessed with trying to figure out who John is and what’s the name of his show!

I liked her thoughtfulness and deliberateness with her patients. I liked knowing she is also someone who needs a therapist as well. It’s given me a new lens to look at me in therapy through.

I really enjoyed this book. The language is very simple and accessible and Lori Gottlieb introduces theoretical concepts in a digestible way. I would recommend this book primarily to people without a psychology background, who may be afraid of engaging with therapy or making the first step to seek professional help. The author moves through past and present, her training experiences and her cases to her own traumas and personal therapy. As a trainee clinical psychologist, I saw myself in her reflections multiple times, and she prompted me to reflect more on my own experiences of therapy. In one of her chapters she explores resistance, and the information associated with that resistance to explore or discuss certain topics in therapy. My experience of personal therapy and treating others often tells me that where there is resistance there is also pain, or fear.  Resistance provide answers to questions we may not feel ready to ask ourselves. I would say this book provides space to reflect and explore the opportunity to change.
