incredibly complex characters, a captivating plot, and very very tear jerking. an exploration of friendship, love, games/gaming, art, family, disability, & work/legacy.
i’d recommend if:
- you need a good cry (multiple times)
- you need to feel something
- you like character-driven reads
- you like following characters/plot over a long period of time
- you like unique characters that are not typically represented in media
- you have an interest in gaming/game design & development
- you like tragedy (jk… unless)
unseriousness aside, for “Amazon’s best book of 2022”, my review absolutely does not do it justice but this book was very special in a way I can’t quite put into words.

I know everyone loved this book and it was chosen as “book of the year” for 2022 by several entities but I found this book so incredibly sad. I kept thinking it would turn itself around and there would be joy or love or peace somewhere but, in the end, it just felt like emotional resignation by the main characters. I love AJ Fickry so I was hoping for some of the same uplift in Tomorrow but, alas, no.
If self-flagellation is your cup of tea, go crazy. Me? I will drop this book at the nearest used book store at my earliest convenience.
