I didn't think the previous book really needed a sequel, but I wanted more of their story so I didn't care. It was so lovely to step back into this world and walk with these characters again – despite someone still trying to assassinate them.

I found the politics in this one slightly weaker than the previous story – or at the very least, harder to follow. It also had the previous volume's issue of villain-monologuing for the last bit. But it also introduced new characters and new angles to explore this world through, and I loved it all. I am absolutely holding my breath for a book three, despite none being announced.

(I also maybe might've cried reading the acknowledgements, but that's irrelevant.)

Probably one of my most anticipated sequels and while it doesn't quite live up to the first, it's still pretty damn good and furthermore it's the kind of book I wish would ridiculously viral. Anyway, Fox Meadows has such a deep mastery of Vel and Cae that their tension feels almost palpable, and there's a fast paced, high adrenaline plot paced perfectly alongside it, creating a heart pounding, emotionally satisfying novel. I do feel that not every plot point was answered - particularly Cae's grief and both men's feeling of responsibility for the others pain, so much so that it feels like an entire scene is missing, or that there should be a third book? But overall, still such a goddamn solid series, especially for my angsty, slow burn girlies.

A great follow-up to A Strange and Stubborn Endurance! The political intrigue continued in twisty and complex ways that definitely keep you engaged. I adored seeing Vel and Cae’s relationship blossom here and watching them navigate even more conflicts together.
New character Asrien took a while to grow on me, but he eventually won me over.

Meadows’ plot is top notch and kept me guessing as the story unfolded. The worldbuilding is fabulous just as in the first book. The love story shines through it all. Just a really great series.
