Simply hermosa. An enchanting expression of Hindu mythology, Indian culture and its clashing views (even the incongruous ones within the Hindu belief system where many queer gods and goddesses exist, but stigma and discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community remain) throughout the last century to the present day, through the perspective of a girl visited by true goddesses to help her navigate her dharma, as the book puts it. Nikita Gill is her own brand of divine, dancing in the footsteps of the goddess Saraswati herself, and always lifting up her readers with her incredible talents to find the divine in themselves. As the goddess Ratri says to Paro,
“You don't see the wind . . . But you do know it is there. You know it exists. You feel it. Faith works the same way.”

The Girl and the Goddess is a beautifully written poetry book on a young girl who lives in India. She experiences a number of hardships including being sexually assaulted in a market, to then falling in love only to have her heart crushed by that very same girl, only for her parents to turn around and distance themselves from her before she finally leaves to study abroad in England.

From personal experience, this book was quite heart-breaking but also gave me a sense of hope. I practice witchcraft and have some sense to spirituality as well. I could dream of one day having my own sisterhood along with the hope that my mom will one day turn around to apologize about some of the things she's said and done towards me.

this was such a beautiful book - easily one of my favorite poetry books that i’ve read. i did feel a little separated from it as a trans masculine person because it was definitely aimed at women and girls. i definitely related to it because i grew up being perceived by society as a girl, but it brought a lot of feelings of gender dysphoria and trauma to the surface, which was obviously uncomfortable. all in all, i’m really glad i read it, and i was in a good place to read it at this particular moment, which isn’t always the case. make sure to check trigger warnings and put yourself first!
