This book is inspired by The Scarlet Pimpernel, which I absolutely love. It reminds me of Victoria Aveyard books, plot twist wise, and This Woven Kingdom (the first chapter has very little dialogue and the romance reminds me of that book as well).

This book has:
Best friend's brother romance
Gut wrenching plot twist
Bonkers ending that will have you anxiously waiting for book 2
True enemies to lovers
Rival brothers, love triangle light
Witch x Witch Hunter
Hard magic system powered by blood
Gaslamp fantasy
Other books this reminded me of: first two Throne of Glass books and Les Miserable

The romantic subplot was different and well done. I liked that the witch and witch hunter were both suspicious and trying to deceive each other. I feel like sometimes books like this just suddenly switch the witch hunter to becoming a sympathizer after k*lling countless witches with little to no foundation for the personality and mind shift. This book doesn't do that.

The first chapter was difficult to get through, but the story picked up quickly afterwards. The ending didn't make sense to me to a degree. It just upended so much at once that I was a bit shell shocked. I'm sure it'll be explained a little better in the next book. I am definitely looking forward to continuing this series!

Content Warning: explicit s*x, s*xual assault/r*pe victim, recovering alcoholic/substance abuser, manipulation, genocide, violence, blood, menstrual cycle blood
