This book was incredible. Tara Westover’s story is powerful and highlights a woman’s journey to and with education in a way that I’ve never seen before. Julia Whelan does a wonderful job of narrating, somehow conveying the emotions behind Tara’s recollections without losing the air of objectivity present in the latter’s account.

The depictions of abuse, physical and emotional, were difficult to digest for a plethora of reasons, but I was unable to stop listening. I know that everyone’s reaction to this memoir may differ based on their personal experiences, and I have spent so much time comparing and contrasting elements of Tara’s story with my own. I felt shock and anguish and even resignation on her behalf. Maybe it’s incorrect to say that I understand why she did certain things, but I sure can’t blame her for any of it - or say that I’d be as strong or as compliant or as detached, as applicable.

I’ve seen online that Tara’s family members remember certain accounts differently than she does, or simply refute her claims. That doesn’t bother me, but I am curious as to the lives and development of others within her parents’ and brother’s reach.

I’ve been contemplating my own journey, past and present, after reading this.

Not what I expected. If it weren't a memoir it would be torture porn.

Not only is this woman’s real life story incredible and heartbreaking but it’s written with such grace and insight; I can’t imagine how much reflection, therapy, editing and pure energy was put into this book.

This book was really heartbreaking and inspiring. Tara Westover has had a life full of experiences many people couldn’t even begin to imagine. But despite all of this, she’s used these experiences to shape who she is today.

I loved the writing style, lyrical yet ‘real’ but I did think that the book didn’t go anywhere or have any new information or ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ until over halfway through and because of that I found it very heavy and emotionally draining at times.

A harrowing memoir about a woman who broke away from an incredibly abusive family to pursue an education.

Difficult to read due to the graphic abuse, neglect and layers of trauma. I'm sure I didn't even capture all of the CWs.

I mostly found it sad and not particularly hopeful which I think just reflects where the author was in her healing journey at the time of writing.

By the end of the book, the author has managed to separate herself from most of her family and is setting boundaries (which is a huge accomplishment!), but it doesn't seem like she's at peace as she keeps trying to pursue a relationship with her mother who both enabled and participated in the abuse and neglect.

Both praising and criticizing this  feels wrong, as it contains  fairly detailed accounts of abuse. However, it was extremely well written and constructed, allowing for a reflection on the broader systematic workings of power relations in religion, family and education. Even though a memoir, it was at times written with so much detail and emotion that I had to remind myself I was listening to a non-fiction work and not a novel by Barbara Kingsolver. Unfortunately, it feels like the legal challenges the author apparently faced, which forced her to include disclaimers, paraphrase and use pseudonyms, somewhat hampered the overall impact of the story.
