“Los animales, asombrados, pasaron su mirada del cerdo al hombre y del hombre al cerdo y, nuevamente, del cerdo al hombre, pero ya era imposible distinguir quién era uno y quién era otro.”

In a way it surprised me but I’ve really enjoyed this novel. I feel that when it comes to celebrated classic, you have as much chances of liking them as you have of the opposite. I have heard many things about this novel, and even though it is a short one and proved to be a fast reading, I didn’t try to read it until now.
This dark fable did a great job at reflecting, through animals, the grandiosity and vices of humanity, as ironic as that is. As much as Orwell himself said that this novel couldn’t be published because it was obviously about the communist regime, I feel that what we can learn of it beyond communism, as it happens with any good fable, because it can be extrapolated to any regimen or stablished order. It’s a reality; no matter how good the initial intentions are, when someone becomes drunk with power and blinded by their own vanity things go awry for the rest in one way or another.
I confess myself to be little informed about communism and to have little knowledge of contemporary history; so I feel that I haven’t squeezed out this novel as much as I could. I’m quite grateful that the edition of this novel I read included a prologue with an explanation of the real people the different animals were posing as and the parallelisms between some scenes and real battles and events.
Regardless, I feel that this novel can be enjoyed without the historical knowledge about the regimen Orwell was denouncing, since it’s at the root of it an humorous and at times dark (because how it can relate to human nature) story; and the “moral of the fable” still hits with force wherever you read it as a critic or as a fable or as both.

"The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again: but already it was impossible to say which was which.”

Absolutely incredible read for people that want to get into the wicked ways of politics.
