I found this book a lightly entertaining and easy read. Captain Hornblower is very likable, even though his lack of confidence was irritating sometimes. I mean, he is obviously a very capable captain, I don’t understand why he never takes credit.

Forester is known to be a leisure sailor himself, and sometimes the abundant sailor jargon gets a bit tiering to someone who doesn’t understand any of it.

The book didn’t make a big impression on me, bad or good, so I probably won’t read any more of the series. One sentience made me sit up and choke on my camomile tea though: “… the Lydia, so graceful and willing when under sail, was a perfect bitch when being towed.” I wasn’t expecting that from a book published in 1937! Mr Forester, you rascal.
