This is immediately going on my favourites shelf. From start to end this novel had me completely engrossed. I listened to the audio book of this one and it was phenomenal. The narrator’s performance enhanced this already amazing book. It is going to cause me physical pain waiting for the publication of “The Strength of the Few”. I need it immediately please!

Something I really enjoyed about this novel was all the different settings it took place in. As readers we were given the chance to explore cities, academies, islands, and go on many trips. I was also surprised and impressed with how clean this novel is- usually there's lots of swearing, sex and violence in these types of fantasy novels and I found this one to be rare in not needing any of that (except some brief violence) to tell a fascinating story. I did struggle to get into the story for the first third, but then couldn't stop reading after that.

This is one of the best first books of a trilogy. I have ever read the amount of twists in this book were amazing. They were phenomenally done. I didn't really see any of them coming. The last a 100 pages or so, were so tense and I was so worried. The book was really emotional at points. I loved the main character, Vis. He had so many different motives for what he was doing whether it was outside forces pushing him one way or his internal motives. This book is compared to red rising and I can definitely see why, but there was just so many more mysteries going on in this book that had me gripped.
