Tan's work is inspirational to me, because he embraces the same creative philosophy that I have found most useful. His quote of another artist's "taking a line for a walk*", is exactly how I feel about drawing most of the time. It's exploratory, and improvised, and about finding the image as you go as much as anything else.

Very hard to dislike this book. Even the endpapers are stunning and how the book is constructed makes you worry you might smudge the papers. Glorious.

As someone who can't draw, the chance to see works in progress from an artist I admire - fascinating, quirky, and odd - pieces from all over and some from works I know and love, such as a storyboard from _The Arrival_, is too good to pass up.
(Read from Netgalley on my iPad, which gives me great quality reproductions.)

A lovely little sketchbook that's beautifully bound and well presented. It's divided into sections and each has a nice introduction to lead you in and there's a full list of media used on each piece at the back. There's a good variety in pieces and process, and the primary focus of his work seems to be a fusion of nature, machinery, and dream logic. There's a great amount of imagination on display here and the pencil sketches were a particular highlight for me. I feel a little harsh only giving it three stars, but whilst I enjoyed my time with it, it didn't engage me enough to want to hang on to it.

Shaun Tan's graphic novels are always a mixture of fantasy and reality and we get to experience his stories even deeper because of the talent of him as not only a story teller, but as an artist. The Bird King takes us through many different pieces of art work from not only his other graphic novels, but from other projects. This book is beautiful and it is a must buy for any reading or writing teacher, any art fan, and definitely any Shaun Tan fan.

I've always been a Shaun Tan fan but had no idea about this published book of unpublished sketches. I adore very much to look at artists sketchbooks and wonder what they are thinking while they are drawing. Given Tan's history of fantastical creatures and stories I was not disappointed.
