Read the short story "Ward Number Six" for a book club meeting that I did not attend.

Wouldn't have read it on my own. Wouldn't have finished it without the incentive of a book club.

Depressing, slow moving and somewhat predictable. There was no one in this story I wanted to spend time with.

I know that Chekhov is commonly rated as a genius. I mean no disrespect to those doyens of literature who make the claim. But this story failed on the most basic level: I didn't want to continue reading.

started a while ago, decided I can't read Chekhov in the winter, must wait for warmer weather . . . look for updates this spring!

Unfortunately, Chekov’s style just wasn’t for me. I found myself getting bored during his short stories and even tried reading his most famous but found myself starting to skim just to get to more interesting parts. I hope that i can eventually finish this when I’m more in the mood to sit with the stories and appreciate the prose, but it just wasn't what I’m looking for right now.

Chekhov's stories explore human relationships, illness, the superficiality of socialites, and how things don't always end as we expect them to. Recommended.

Having previously read Ward 6 and The Student (both excellent), I read this collection primarily for The Black Monk. This story is fantastic, and I also thoroughly enjoyed A Woman's Kingdom. The other five stories are just okay.
