If you're after happy endings, or just happy stories in general, read something else. But if you’re after a bunch of short, brutally realistic stories of the life of Indian immigrants in America, read this book. It's beautifully written and explores many different themes convincingly. However, I found it somewhat excruciating having to witness so many likeable characters have their life go wrong. The book is hooking but it's cruel how many times you have to "start over" with new characters and a new storyline, for the stories are pretty short. Overall, I enjoyed it but I'm more into novels.

There’s something so intimate about her writing that makes “short stories” feel like an inadequate label for the collection. Even with the similar subject matter covered in most of her work (Bengali American family and relationship narratives,) it works because of the complexity of her characters and how unique their interactions are.
Unaccustomed Earth and Hell Heaven were the strongest to me.

Jhumpa Lahiri - wow. What an amazing author. I love how complete and full each of these short stories felt. And she writes the exact emotion. Must must read.
