I never gave this book enough credit when I first started reading it, I found it was boring and to wordy for what I needed at the time but picking this up again witht the audiobook was absolutely the best decision I ever made.
Rogerson has such a way of painting a picture and showing the reader exactly where they are and I really enjoyed her take on fae.
In the future if I were to reread this I would definitely use the audiobook from the start.

Writing: beautiful
Characters: Hilarious
Plot: SUPER THIN
There was so much potential! I wasn't a huge fan of the world, or the plot AT ALL, but I still had a fun time reading it.

The world was INCREDIBLE. Very unique concepts which had depth that wasn't explored enough. It was cute that Rook was childish, and they had a good dynamic, but did Isobel really have to be 17? He's 100+ years, she could have at least been 25...
The world also had a lot of creeping horror potential which lured me even if it was never used.
Wanted it to be darker. That's what the world entailed, I believe.

Probably like a 2.5 for me? I liked the bits of lore (what I mostly kept reading for) but everything else just felt fairly shallow -- I don't really go in for the whole forbidden love/tortured prince/love will conquer all tropes, but it was an okay read.

I think this book has the perfect length for what it is.
As a painter myself, I was pleasantly surprised at how wonderfully the author managed to capture the experience of the process of painting. I really loved the chapter where the main character made egg tempera (at least, that's what I think it was!) paint with very limited supplies. I really appreciated her craftiness and wit! For such a short young adult novel, I appreciated the balance between Isobel's inner thoughts and struggles and her character development.
This book also satisfied me in its depiction of faerie/fey folk. They're unpredictable, enigmatic but also very charismatic and have two sides to them it seems. The magic in this world is so whimsical and really does feel like a fairy tale. Gadfly and Rook were such fun characters to read about!
I do think the romance was a bit insta-lovey, though. Which is one of the two things I didn't like about this, the other being that the ending felt really sudden and I would've loved one more chapter to tie everything up even more.
