The Whispers made me very uncomfortable, like I was a voyeur glimpsing the saddest, most secret parts of people’s lives. Seeing things they didn’t even want to acknowledge to themselves. It was very interesting and deeply unsettling.
I didn’t love it as much as The Push, perhaps because the horror/psychological thriller aspects of this were more subtle, yet more realistic. The Push is an edge case scenario that I can enjoy reading about even while it makes me sad/scared/unsettled.
Spoiler for The Push: Sure, there are some violent sociopath kids out there, but a murderous child is not at all a common occurrence.
On the other hand, the horror of The Whispers is far too plausible and that makes it even more terrifying and uncomfortable.
Excellently written, but it made me feel icky.

Solid 5-star book for me. The mystery starts right at the jump and pulls you in immediately. Recommended if you enjoyed Verity or Baby Teeth. Trigger warnings: infidelity, infertility, domestic abuse.
very mixed feelings toward this book but i couldn't put it down
even though the character development was kinda mid…i LOVED her writing style, esp how she seamlessly switched between different povs without interrupting the narrative flow.
very slay ashley. now i want to see this on tv !
