I hadn't expected to enjoy this book. The notion of a man thought dead for a Century being found at the last minute and left with full command of the Alliance fighting armada seemed clumsy and ludicrous when to me when this book was proposed for our fortnightly book group. However, Jack Campbell managed to turn this into a compelling read and now I cannot wait to read the next instalment of Lost Fleet.
Before now I haven't read much in the way of real Sci-Fi; usually the author becomes bogged down in incomprehensible descriptions of scientific fact (or fiction), or gets carried away with matter transporters and advanced laser weaponry. Although Jack Campbell does venture into the realms of complicated (and perhaps inaccurate?) scientific theory on fast travel and hibernation technologies, he doesn't overwhelm the reader or force them to study advanced mathematical formulae in order to follow the story.
The character's are well formed and interesting. Whilst the story itself doesn't present any major surprises in terms of plot, it is well presented and griping.

Could I tell you why I liked this? No, but I really did.
This book is almost entirely space battles, thinking about space battles, drilling space battles and metaphorically smacking the hell out of insubordinate Captains who would rather go out in a blaze of glory than follow a formation.
Just ate it up and I will be reading the other books.
