House of Salt and Sorrows is a gothic retelling of the 12 Dancing Princesses with paranormal elements. Annaleigh is the 6th daughter of Duke  Thaumas, but now she’s second in line to inherit the title from their father. Tragedy has struck their family often— first their mother, dying after childbirth. Then followed by her four eldest sisters, all in varying circumstances. I was immediately hooked by this story, but I was left feeling like something was missing from the story.

The ending felt so out of pocket to the beginning of the story and I found myself trying to figure out what in the world was going on? The big plot twist, while hard to guess, was also at the same time predictable. I think this could’ve been resolved better or been more fleshed out.

Cassius is a dream though. We stan him and Annaleigh

"I'm here for the same reason you are. To dance."
I knew I didn't like scary books, but this one just sounded so good! Well, after I've read it, I'm certain that scary books are not for me haha. But even though I couldn't read this book while it was dark outside (ridiculous, I know), I loved the suspension and the feeling that I knew something was going on, but I didn't have a clue why. The dark vibes and mystery often switched to a lovely chatting and dancing at a ball during only a couple of pages, and I liked that for some reason. I never knew what would be the next chapter about.
After finishing the book, the sweet scenes left a pretty bitter aftertaste, but oh well.

The only thing I didn't like was that some things toward the ending felt a little too convenient and I needed further explanation about why they were the way they were. But I read the last 100 pages so fast and was so immersed into the story that I didn't even really care. That's also why I give this book 4.5 stars, for the majority of the book I thought this would be a 5-star read, and if the ending wasn't so good, the too-convenient things would cost this book a full star.
And, of course, I can't forget about the perfect love interest and the spooky vibes, just right for a fast read before Halloween. Overall, I'd recommend, even if scary books aren't really your thing.

This was a solid enjoyable spooky read! I liked the unreliable narrator, atmosphere, and premise. The romance fell a bit flat for me, though. This book isn’t ground-breaking or incredible, but it was fun
