The Everlasting Hills explores a unique part of humanity through the eyes of a young, mentally-handicapped boy. Such a powerful, beautiful story of perseverance and redemption. Hunt writes with confidence and simplicity that captures the depths of the soul and makes it accessible even while maintaining its mystery.

I remember reading this book in my middle school years. That time when my angst, just like everyone else's angst was at its max. I had the typical soul-searching frustration of growing up and feeling like no one really understood who I was. This book looks pretty boring on the outside, but as soon as I started reading it I connected with the main character instantly. The complicated and resentful relationship he has with his father is so painful, because try as he might, his father refuses to believe in him.

Classic running away trope- and then bonding with this other man who turns into a true father figure for him. I ate it up as a child and I still think about this book. Like all coming of age books, I'm glad I read it when I was still on the precipice of growing up because I think that was what gave this book such impact over me.
