i was thoroughly, incredibly bored.

the language is undeniably smart and the observations and commentary about various topics are cool and spot-on, unfortunately i found it all quite dull. the book lacks structure and it meanders on and on about many things pointlessly. the author has done extensive research no doubt, yet he writes them into the story in chunks that i found it indigestible and unreadable. in fact, his prose is a bit too overwritten for me. next, the characters are empty and unnecessary, as this book would've been better as a collection of essays. i wouldn't have read them of course but if the author wanted to show off his detailed research about schizophrenia or ecology, he could have just done that.

if you ask me what this book was about, i wouldn't be able to tell you even if you paid me a large sum.

Between 2 and 3 stars for me. There was a lot happening in this book, in terms of plotlines and characters. I enjoyed the immediate stories surrounding the characters Lucy and Olivia, but I was not so interested in the other characters and their stories. There was a motif the whole way through about doubles (twins, double lives, splits, etc.), but I'm still not sure what the larger purpose of the motif was. I could see this motif speaking against predestination (biological, at least) in favor of the choices we make shaping our paths. Or it could be about unifying contradicting aspects of our lives and finding peace with them. I think that's why I landed on 2 stars, I'm not entirely sure what the book was trying to say about these ideas.
