Double Blind

Edward St. Aubyn

3.1 AVERAGE

I listened to it, and the two stars are mostly for the joy of having spent 7h30 listening to Benedict Cumberbatch's voice. I did enjoy the writing style, that did not shy away from scientific terms and exposing rather complex biology research in a compelling way, and did not sound pretentious to me. However, I did not really appreciate some of the characters development that felt to me rather uninspired. But I was still enjoying it until... I felt that the story was reaching a climax, and suddenly I heard Benedict says "Thanks for listening to blabla". And I was like is it really the end now? So many things were just left in suspense as if it had been written without an ending and when the author felt like "oh I do not really know where I am going now", he just stopped. Disappointed because I was really waiting for that climax that would have forgiven some of the choices I did not like.

I won't lie to you, this was probably a bit too clever for me, but somehow I didn't mind. Francis, whose job is to rewild a property in Sussex, meets Olivia at a conference and they become lovers. Olivia's friend Lucy returns to London after some years in New York to work for the super-rich Hunter on one of his scientific projects before receiving some unexpected news that binds them all together. The settings are glorious, the characters engaging, sometimes over the top, and the language complex and lyrical. Richly detailed, Double Blind ruminates on the environment, the brain, genetics, and relationships, and is darkly humorous, thought-provoking, touching, and marvel-inducing.

Interesting snapshot in the lives of three friends. But we don’t find out what happens to them.
It is rich with science, which I enjoyed. Interesting for these times- Lois off talk about wilding projects in the uk. The rich American is an entertaining character.

Pretty used going. Oddly got better towards the end.

Clever. Funny. Humane. Philosophical. Erudite.

Meh. I really liked the writing in the Patrick Melrose novels, but nothing I’ve read of St Aubyn’s since has been as trenchant or as resonant.

I hope the companion book coming out this year is also read by Benedict Cumberbatch. I really enjoyed the narration and I think listening to this book probably allowed me to really get into the story and enjoy it more than reading might have.
