A very well-written and well-imagined world. It was too low on action to hold my son's interest, but I'm keen to read the sequel myself.
This is a great middle-grades book that packs in a ton of action, danger, and dinosaurs. It is a little violent at times, but still a great adventure choice. It really strikes me as a combination of Hunger Games and Jurassic Park. And who can argue with that?
Loved it! A fun take on what would happen if Jurassic Park were real.
I started reading parts of the second book in this series and decided I should borrow this one from the library first. It's a fun futuristic series where people have brought the dinosaurs back to life - bigger and better than before - and the dinosaurs have then run rampant. The people living in underground bunkers have been taught that no humans survived anywhere else, but not everyone believes it. And so we have an adventure where a girl must try to follow her missing-presumed-dead father and 'escape'.
I think my grandson will enjoy these books.

At first I didn't think this book was going to develop the characters enough for me to really take interest in them but before we were half way in I was hooked. I thought the adventure was fun and the self realization that happened throughout the book was a good lesson for my 7.5 yr daughter. She loved the book and we both agree that we want to read the sequal.
We received this book in the "Science Fiction Isn't Just Outer Space" BYL Reading Crate.

As middle grade books go, I enjoyed this one for the premise, setting, and characters. My son (9) just finished it and I told him I wanted to read it too, so we could discuss.
Set 150 years in the future, the main character Sky lives in an underground compound. He father disappeared when she was seven leaving her an orphan. Premise being Jurassic Park-like, scientists brought back dinosaurs and they overtook the world. Sky sets off, leaving the compound, to find her father after five years have passed. Fun encounters with dinosaurs, and I liked the new characters introduced.
The only parts that got me were the faulty timelines…but…willing to overlook as it is a kids book. Ends on a cliffhanger, so I placed a hold at our library for the next one!

This would've gotten a lower score, but I realize that I'm not the intended target age group, which probably affects my opinion. (That said, I'm not the target age group for the Rick Riordan books either, and I genuinely love those. So. Same goes for a lot of teen books.)
One of the MOST annoying things with the narration is that "dinosaurs" are pronounced "dinosaw" which...is that correct? Maybe it is? But I've never heard it and it's super annoying.
But yeah overall this book did not live up to my expectations. I have so many questions, there are so many things that don't make sense (for one: if you've lived for 12 years without eating meat - can your stomach really handle going on a carnivore diet without fucking up? But on the other hand they seem to never have an urge to pee or other in the whole book). And ok, sure, if you're a middle grader reading this book you may not care, but just because the intended target age group collectively PRESUMABLY don't care about it, that's not an excuse for sloppy writing.
Characters are boring. At this point, the only thing that could make me keep reading the rest of this series is if Todd and Sean fall in love. THAT would be a nice twist to your regular apocalyptic love triangle! Also: would it really hurt to add more female characters that are not mothers?! And can the MC not have to basically fucking BABYSIT her best (male!) friend?!
If you think this review is sloppily written, just think of it as a reflection of the book itself. It gets one star for dinosaurs, one star for female MC in a dinosaur sci-fi, and one star because I probably would've enjoyed it more if I'd been 15 years younger (my 13 yo self would not have enjoyed it though).

This book was just fun! Set 150 years in the future - scientists have brought back the dinosaurs, but little did they know that dinosaurs would take over the planet and force people underground.
Language: None, it's a middle-grade novel.
Sexual content: None, squeaky clean.
Violence: A guy gets his leg bit off, people are attacked by dinosaurs and threatened with guns, one man is killed. Dinosaurs are killed and some of their meat eaten. I didn't feel that anything was too gruesome, but I wouldn't give it to a younger or sensitive child until they were ready.
Religious elements: This book does talk about "millions of years ago" and references animals "evolving" into this or that. As a young-earth creationist myself, I'd make sure my child was well grounded in a biblical worldview of these matters before handing them this book.
Overall though, this book was an interesting, quick read, with a fast-moving fascinating plot, and I am looking forward to picking up the next one!
