The last book I read, Adventurers Guild, delighted me because nothing about it was predictable -- it used none of the usual tropes of YA/MG books. Edge of Extinction used every single one of them...
The book's setting was what first caught my attention: As in Jurassic Park, dinosaurs were cloned back to life. They weren't restricted to one island zoo though, they were everywhere from pets to wild areas. But when they were cloned, they brought a virus back with them as well, one which wiped out 99% of the world's humans. With vastly reduced number, humans were no longer able to control the dinosaurs, and they had to retreat underground to live.
That sounds cool, doesn't it? Unfortunately everything else about this book was the same as so many other YA/MG books -- spunky female main character is an outcast, blah blah blah. I wanted to know more about the world and the dinosaurs, but instead it was all about the social Drama around the girl. Oh, and the Jurassic Park book was now taught in classes...
Based on other reviews, the story does eventually move into the world of the dinosaurs, but this first book also ends right in the middle of the story. I dodged a bullet. DNF

So many plot twists--one I actually gasped at.
Sky has grown up in a underground bunker, one of 4 in the US, with 94 other human survivors of a disaster humanity caused: cloned dinosaurs have killed most humans by attack and dino-disease.
Her father left her behind 5 years ago and went "topside" --why?? Her best friend Shaun finds a note he wrote--almost a year late--and she sets out to complete the mission he has set her--and hopefully to find him. But they are not the only survivors--the Oaks live in tree houses and have learned to cohabit with Dinos. What else has "the Noah" lied about? (p229)
Love how Sky's studying and sketching dinos underground helps her inform people topside--they have practical knowledge, but she has science.
p313 Ivan: we can't wipe out the dinos, because their prey are gone-we can't go back. "Evolution doesn't work in reverse."
p317 are Todd and Shawn protecting Sky, as Ivan says?

I loved this book! The action is great, the characters are believable, and the mix of science and pseudo-science (also known as imagination) works great.

This middle grade was another quick book for me. Emma loved it and I had fun reading it after her. I didn't find the characters quite as compelling as an adult (I often thought they acted a little too whiny or without much sense), but maybe I expect too much of an 11 year old (ha!). We will both be reading the next book in the series.
High interest topic (dinosaurs!) for my 7 and 9 year old boys. We read this aloud together over a couple months. It was easy to set down and pick up again. Towards the end we couldn’t stop. Enjoyable for all of us.
This was really well written! I've been reading a lot of middle grade fiction for work and this is by far the best I have read so far.
Right from the start it's action packed, gripping, exciting and did I mention incredibly well written?
I think this author is a force to be reckoned with and I can't wait to read the next one!
