This is another one of those several-books-in-one reviews of mine. I’m really struggling to keep up with the reviews, mostly for personal reasons, and I have even ditched the idea of even trying to review the books which I really didn’t care about or for which it’s so long time since I read them that details are becoming sketchy.

Actually the second book in the series is already starting to fall in the latter category. I really should use the note taking feature of Kindle more.

Anyway, the first book, was a fairly solid five star one. It was also the best one so far. As I mentioned in my review of the first one, these books are what I would call hard core science fiction. Not hard core in the sense that all the science is following the laws of physics as we know it or can predict but that the books rely heavily on fictional science. Implants and sentient AI’s abound, plenty of nanotechnology (and picotechnology), K2 civilizations and so on and so forth… Despite the abundance of very powerful technologies the books never fall into the trap of one person, ship or nation becoming uberpowerful against all other foes. At least not so far.

I really do like the main characters. They are generally very competent and very kick-ass (when it’s needed) characters. Their supporting AI’s add nicely to the character repertoire and the dialogue between them is nicely done. Add to this excellent universe building, a good basic story and good writing in general and we have very good books indeed.

The reason I say that the first book was the best one (so far) is that this book focuses more on the actions (mostly as in kicking ass) of the main protagonists and the universe at that point is smaller and less complicated. As the story continues and evolves politics, scheming, betrayals and back stabbing enters the scene and, as always, those are not my favorite subjects. It is still very good books though and they all got 4 out of 5 stars from me except the last one which was almost entirely politics. Given the title that was not very surprising though. Of course this is a quite subjective rating and whatever your preference for these kind of things are you might arrive at a different one.

Regardless of personal preferences these are all very good and well implemented books and I am looking forward to read the next one in the series.
