In "The Plotters" we follow Reseng, a contract killer and the right-hand man of the Old Raccoon who is the leader of The Library of Dogs, one of the many contract killing groups in Seoul.

Old Raccoon adopted Reseng when he was a child and essentially raised him to become a contract killer. Each hit is designed and planned by The Plotters, a group of highly placed individuals with government ties. Contract killers like Reseng are given a file in their target and a set of instructions for the killing that they must follow to the letter.

Chaos erupts when Reseng goes off-script, interacting with his target and having his body cremated instead of doing as he was told. His actions have consequences as The Plotters intended to use the target's death for political reasons.

Reseng knows that in his line of work, contract killers eventually become targets--loose ends that have to be dealt with. When it happens to him, he decides to go down fighting, teaming up with an unlikely pair of women who have information about The Plotters and their plans.

I thought there would be more action in this book. Instead, the book focuses a lot more on Reseng's inner thoughts. He begins to ask questions about why he does the kind of work he is in, and why The Plotters are controlling society through calculated assassinations. He begins to question the way society is and his role in it as a contract killer.

As someone used to reading Western thrillers, this book felt very different. But once I let go of what I thought a crime thriller should be, I began to enjoy it a little more. It has a more literary feel compared to other crime thrillers I've read. If this sounds like your thing, then you should give this book a try.
