When I checked this out at the library for #koreanmarch it looked familiar. It wasn't until I got it home that I realized it was because my fourteen-year-old had already checked it out and read it. He seemed to like it, so this book went immediately to the top of my TBR.

I normally don't read a lot of crime/thrillers, but I did enjoy this. The final showdown made me think this would be amazing adapted as a movie, but overall, the structure of this book is sort of fragmented — different stories that lead into each other, which might be a challenge, adaptation-wise. I enjoyed the characters, and the many meditations on how most people get stuck on a track in their lives, whether that track is assassin, factory worker, prostitute, etc., and how difficult it is to change tracks and imagine a different life for yourself, even if your life is at stake. Or even to be fully aware of the parallel tracks, the different sorts of lives being led all around you.

Happy to have picked it up. Only a few moments I cringed a bit imagining my teen reading this, but most of them because I thought they were going to go darker than they did.

not a genre i’d usually read, but still i enjoyed it. unsu kim’s writing style, despite being in 3rd person, remained engaging throughout the book. reseng was a strangely relatable character, despite him seeming like a really sh!tty person at times the writer still manages to create sympathy towards him. hope misa ( love her, best character) is live, laugh, loving in japan. it was well translated and i’ll be reading more stuff my unsu kim soon. if it’s bad i’ll be sad lol.

This book is unlike anything I have read so far. Despite focussing on the pitiful life of an assassin whose world has more filth than beauty to offer him, the book is not heavy at all.

While I wouldn't call it funny at all, there are some things that could make you chuckle. And there are surprises everywhere - I didn't know what to expect so the story was really quite a ride for me. At some places things seem serene and ordinary, while at others they are so packed with tension and blockbuster movie type of action.

All in all, it was quite an interesting read. Though to be honest I think I would have enjoyed it a whole lot better if things did not look so bleak for me in life while reading it.

I'm so surprised at how much I liked this! I usually don't enjoy books revolving around underworld crime 👀
