4 stars/I really liked it.
It was so much more than what I thought it was going to be. It took awhile to come together, but once it did... it was unexpected and delightful. A philosophical assassin/spy thriller.
At the heart of the criminal underworld, in downtown Seoul, is a non-descript library. The political machinations of the country rely on the services the library provides; deviously untraceable and unremarkable murder. Murder that does not look like murder. From behind the scenes Plotters collect information on their targets, putting together elaborate schemes to take out them out.
Reseng is an assassin carrying out the plotters detailed instructions. An orphaned raised by the library’s operator Old Racoon. He has been in the game too long. He has seen too much and he knows too much. He knows an assassin isn’t supposed to ask questions, but Reseng has had one too many friends end up disappeared. He can’t stop his mind from wandering, or the questions from forming. When Resengs stumbles upon a subversive plot designed by a disgruntled Plotter intent on upending the library and the whole corrupt system, he must decide if he will silently disappear or go out with bang.
The Plotters is The Maltese Falcon meets The Borne Identity. A complex noir plot pulled along by an aging assassin figuring out what his life is worth in the absurd face of politics, power, and death. There are no straightforward answers here, just the umami of being alive and it feels right. I highly recommend The Plotters.

Honestly every single page of this book was stunning! Every aspect of it and how the characters developed in their weird kind of ways and as the plot unraveled I fell more and more in love with it. And dont get me started on the end! I read it a dozen times, I was so satisfied and yet crying and it's not often that a book leaves me feeling like this.
Actual rating 3.3. This book has great potential for a full ratings but I kinda disappointed with it on my last few chapters. Maybe because i'm expecting more gruesome and action packed scenes but all I've got just a life of an assasin.
I adore Reseng and I really do, since he loves books and cats. And what's with the library as sacred place for planning a murder. I'm picturing the library clearly in my head and I love it!
Loving most of the characters, like Bear, Jeongan, Misa, the girl at the factory, the old man and the dog. Overall it's a good read but I would love to know more about the closure. The ending felt a bit rushed for me. But I think this book will be great as a movie adaptation.

Enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would, and though the ending leaves me feeling like wanting more, I kind of liked how it ended in symmetry with the opening of the book. Overall this was a fun read with questionably likable characters, even if it does feel a bit meandering at times.

This was so original and visual! The Plotters creates a dark, nihilistic world of assassins and plotters (the masterminds who plot the killings), and looks at how power lies not in a person but a system, which can perhaps only be taken apart if the pawns rise up to take control of the plot.
