I got this book in an Audible sale months ago. At the time I had recently listened to Watsky’s latest album x Infinity, and I didn’t know much about the guy.
In the months since buying the book I have enjoyed x Infinity even more and it has become one of my favourite albums I have heard this year, but I hadn’t looked outside of that album to know more about George Watsky. This urge to know more about him, and my increasing backlog of purchased audiobooks led me to finally decide to read this collection of ‘essays’. The audiobook being narrated by Watsky was the main reason I was compelled to read it.
How To Ruin Everything is a collection of stories of Watsky’s life. Overall I think the book is great and I laughed out loud several times. Watsky’s narration was great too. I wouldn’t have listened to anyone else tell his story. There were 3 stories that really stood out to me: The one about smuggling a narwhal tusk, the one about liking older women, and his story of his epilepsy. These are the stories that keep it to a four star book for me. The rest were pretty good - I still laughed a bit. Then there were also some that confused me (I didn’t really ‘get’ switching between fishing and being on a plane when not a lot really happens). If all the stories were of the quality of the first one this would have been a five star book for me.
Four stars is still great and I recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Watsky. I’ll be reading and listening to anything he puts out in the future.
